develOOp another fine develOOpment

For those who don't know what dabble DB is. In short: it's a web2.0 application that provides a mixture of the functionalities provided by a spreadsheet, a database and a reporting engine.
I've been using it as a way to collaboratively track and record the 3000+ members of an NGO.

Basically the work flow was.
1. Import an excel file with 3000+ rows and 20 colums into dabbleDB
2. Follow the DabbleDB guidelines to normalize the table into user-profile, cities, functions, membership, ...

These pages explain the need and functioning of a small module which puts a certain degree of access control on menu's.
End result is that we can define which menu trees are accessible for a given role.

The Use case

• 1 intranet for a company with n departements
• Each departement has x editors
• Content of each department is gathered in y menu's
• Editors can only edit content from own department
• Editors can only attach content in own menu's
  

For a client i needed to investigate S3 storage for a drupal media site. A 30 minutes job i figured.
Basically i just needed to see how to install it, check if all drivers were installed and check how we should configure it for the site they needed.

After 3 hours of 'working' i still hadn't configured anything although i worked very hard.
Read on to know what happened...

I just found out today, that google’s image search has the option to only show images featuring ‘faces’. So no let’s try that with ‘Drupal’ as our search term.

Two questions come to my mind before i press the submit button:

1. Will the druplicon appear between the images?

My Dell M65 with Quadro FX 350M card was running hot on the latest Compiz Fusion apt-get update's.
I had had it run very smoothly on beryl but than i headed for the adventurous path and moved to Compiz Fusion bleeding edge. My dell m65 portable was only 1 year old, and running a Nvida (i.e NOT ATI) graphics card, so I figured that all would be ok.
Allthough i was amazed by the very-well-behaving-integration of Beryl and Compiz, I was a bit dissapointed by the sluggish reaction of all window operations (rotating cube, zooming, mini/maximizing, ..)

Plaxo is rolling out it's version 3.0 (beta) of their webapplication.
They've bought the group of young developers around http://hipcal.com/ , and my guess is that it's those guys who have played an active role in the complete rework of their webapplication.

Some points of interest.

• They support Open-id. Great to see another big player support it. Drupal was already rewarded for their work to support OpenID (http://drupal.org/node/162356)
  

Ik heb net een artikeltje op drupal.be geplaatst om uit te leggen hoe je xampp voor linux moet configureren om meerdere sites op je ubuntu machine kan draaien. etc/hosts en vhosts zijn de sleutelwoorden waardoor ik nu locaal makkelijk kan surfen naar http://klant1, http://subsite.klant2 etc...

Setup :

• Ubuntu 7.04
• installed Xampp 4 linux manually using the steps provided at that page. Default credentials is root without a password

My "Pro Drupal Development" book has arrived. I still have one week of free time left so i hope to get to the end of it!

Middle of day TWO.

Drupal stuff first

My third encounter with http://drupal.org/user/9446 alias chx. After the 2 previous talks i was totally prepared for him. In case you never saw chx in action during a talk. He is clever, very clever, spends lot's of hours coding Drupal, but he tends to loose himself in technical details during his talks which makes them rather hard to follow for a non-core drupal developer.
